About Us
Welcome to The Humane Society of the Uwharries (HS-URE). The Humane Society of the Uwharries is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, 100 percent volunteer-based animal welfare organization in Montgomery County, North Carolina. Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals and unite families with their forever friends by creating a network of volunteer advocates, foster caregivers, local veterinarians, and shelters. We work together to provide health programs, education, and rescue to the local community.
HS-URE is governed by bylaws and a dedicated board of directors and advisory council. We proudly serve the animals and people of Montgomery County and are committed to raising public awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering. We also provide discounts for these services as funding is available.
We offer various opportunities for education, volunteering, fostering, and we have a section dedicated to frequently asked questions about our services. Our organization is deeply rooted in our community, and we continue to strive to make a positive impact on the lives of animals and the people who love them.
Our Goals
At HS-URE, our goals are to:
- Treat all animals and people with respect and dignity.
- Raise public awareness about the humane treatment of all animals.
- Work diligently to educate the community regarding overpopulation by increasing awareness of spay/neuter programs.
- Assist the community in obtaining basic healthcare services for their pets.
- Assist lost pets in finding their family.
- Provide a safe and loving environment for those we can and provide peace and comfort for those we cannot.
- Educate the community to develop fulfilling, lifelong relationships with their forever friend.
Our History
Originally founded in 1979 as "The Montgomery County Humane Society, Inc." the organization was reorganized and renamed "The Humane Society of the Uwharries" in 2024 after the passing of Sally Morris. We will continue to honor Sally and the founding purpose of providing care, support, and resources to animals in need in Montgomery County. As a volunteer-based organization, our success is a result of the dedication and passion of our volunteers and the unwavering support of our community.
